IN 2015, ABRAXAS HIGH SCHOOL BEGAN A school GARDEN. THE GARDEN BEGAN BY TRANSFORMING A LITTLE USED TENNIS COURT INTO A thriving outdoor lab to teach students about growing healthy food, and giving back to the community by donating the produce to the people in our community that need it the most. half of the tennis court grows produce in soil supplied through our compost program. The other half of the garden is powered by an 8000 gallon aquaponic pond filled with over 300 tilapia fish. the garden was built entirely by students in the ABraxas construction class, as well as students in the aquaponic and agriculture classes. We have grown tremendously since our BEGINNING. we have donated over 6000 pounds of fresh produce to needy families in our community, and we have over 150 diploma bound students working/learning in the garden yearly, we also work in tandom with our special needs students in our transition progam that serves students from the ages of 18 to 22.

Gardening in January. #growfood
Tawny, Rocky & Frankie sneaking in dinner before the next rain burst.
This was our first try at growing peanuts. We planted them on August 6th. The students were fired up to get them in the ground now it’s up to the culinary class to make some Abraxas peanut butter, Thai peanut sauce or whatever else they can dream up. Four and a half months to grow peanuts, think of a farmer next time you eat a PB&J.
We fired up the new pizza oven yesterday after school. It’s primed and ready to celebrate the end of a great quarter with a culinary arts class pizza party this Friday! 🍕 #roccboxbygozney
Today’s menu includes Riandra’s famous Creole Cabbage with sausage and bacon. The kids devoured it in minutes! Who doesn’t like cabbage? 🥬
We planted short day onions today. They will be ready for the culinary program in 100 days! The barn cats couldn’t wait that long, Tawny, Rocky and Frankie all showed up for an early dinner.
Even though it 81 outside, we’re still cooking broccoli cheddar potato soup! Come get it! Broccoli 🥦 🧀 🥔 #soupseason
